A product photo style guide for a consistent catalog

Write down six rules and use them for every product: the same background for all main images, the same camera angle within a category, the same light checked against the real product, the product filling 75 to 90% of the frame, one aspect ratio for the whole gallery and a fixed way to name files. Shoppers compare products side by side, and inconsistent photos make that comparison unfair.

Why consistency matters

Shoppers compare products side by side on category pages. If one chair is shot from above in warm light and another from the side in cold light, the comparison is unfair to both, and the store looks less professional.

The six rules

  • The same background on every main image. White or a light neutral works on most marketplaces and in ads
  • The same camera angle and height for the main image within a category
  • The same light temperature, with colours checked against the real product
  • The product filling 75 to 90% of the frame, as Google recommends
  • The same aspect ratio across the gallery. Square or 4:5 are the most flexible
  • Fixed file names, such as product-name-colour-view.jpg

Use it as a brief

Put the rules on one page with two or three example photos that show the look you want. Send it with every shoot, whether you photograph in-house, use a studio or generate scenes, so new products match the old ones.

Frequently asked questions

White or grey background?

Either works, as long as every main image uses the same one. White is the safest choice for marketplaces and Google Shopping.

Which aspect ratio is best for product photos?

Square (1:1) or 4:5. Both work on product pages, marketplaces and social media. Pick one and use it for the whole gallery.

Put it into practice

Better product content, without a studio day per product.
