Google Shopping image requirements for product images
From 31 January 2027, every product image in Google Merchant Center must be at least 500 × 500 pixels, and Google recommends around 1500 × 1500. Files can be up to 64 megapixels and 16 MB. The main image must show the product clearly, filling 75 to 90% of the frame, with no promotional text, watermarks, logos or borders. Each colour variant needs its own image.

What the main image may show
The main image (image_link) must give a clean, unobstructed view of the product for sale. Google lists these as not allowed:
- Promotional text, prices, shipping information or calls to action
- Watermarks, copyright symbols or added logos
- Borders
- Placeholders such as “coming soon” or a generic image
- An image that is just a square of one colour
Variants, extra angles and lifestyle images
Each variant needs its own image that matches its colour, pattern, finish and material, with one variant per image rather than a group shot of every colour. Put extra angles and close-ups in additional_image_link and images of the product in use in lifestyle_image_link, so the main image can stay clean.
Image URLs must start with http or https, be crawlable by Googlebot-image and stay stable, without timestamps or session IDs.
Frequently asked questions
Can a lifestyle photo be the main image?
The main image should show the product clearly and on its own. Google has a separate field, lifestyle_image_link, for images of the product in use.
What happens if my images break the rules?
Merchant Center flags the product and it may not be shown until the image is fixed. Check the diagnostics in your Merchant Center account after every catalogue update.
