Store foundations

Which payment methods should your webshop offer?

Offer cards plus the methods your customers already use: a mobile wallet such as MobilePay in Denmark, Apple Pay or Google Pay, local bank payments such as iDEAL in the Netherlands, and invoice or instalments where shoppers expect them. Show the logos by the buy button and in the cart, because a familiar payment method also tells shoppers their money is safe.

Why payment methods decide sales

Among shoppers who abandoned a checkout for a reason other than browsing, Baymard found that 19% didn't trust the site with their card details, 10% had their card declined and 9% didn't find enough payment methods. All three are about payment. A shopper who sees the method they already use knows their money is handled by someone they trust, whatever they think of your store.

What to offer

Check what your own customers use before you add a method. Each one adds fees and something to maintain.

  • Cards

Visa and Mastercard, and in Denmark the Dankort, usually as Visa/Dankort.

  • Mobile wallets

MobilePay in Denmark, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, which make checkout on a phone much shorter.

  • Local bank payments

Methods such as iDEAL in the Netherlands when you sell to those markets.

  • Invoice and instalments

Pay later or in parts, through providers such as Klarna, where your customers expect it.

  • PayPal

Useful for shoppers abroad who don't want to enter card details with a store they don't know.

Show them early

Show the payment logos by the buy button, in the cart and in the footer, so shoppers know before checkout that they can pay their way. Generic "secure checkout" badges add little next to a payment brand the shopper recognises.

When a payment fails

A declined card shouldn't end the purchase. Say clearly what went wrong, keep everything the shopper has entered, and suggest another payment method on the same screen.

Frequently asked questions

Which payment methods do Danish shoppers expect?

Cards, including Visa/Dankort, and MobilePay are the ones Danish webshops usually offer first. Apple Pay, Google Pay and invoice or instalments are common additions. Check your own customer data before you add more.

Do I need buy now, pay later?

It depends on your products and customers. It is more common for higher-priced items such as furniture, electronics and fashion. Try it, and watch both checkout completion and returns.
